Children Books are Educational Tools

Children books do not belong in the toy box or the sand box. They are not carpet surfboards, big wheel ramps, Frisbees or mud pie platters. They are not CDs, movies or video games! Our children have plenty of these type things to entertain themselves with 24/7. Children books do not have to substitute nor supplement for toys or other things of leisure. Yet, we often choose our children's books as if they were toys; spin-off from daytime kid shows, popular children movies, cartoons, super heroes, and because they are cute, funny, or even silly.

If we examine what we expect from children books we may define what they really are and should be! Children books are among the first things purchased for the mental development of children. They are introduced at a very crucial time in the development of children. We expect that the books will set them on a course to have success in school, at play, college and ultimately in life. More immediately, we expect that children books will teach the child its color, shapes, numbers, to read, morals, behavior, to test, use and retain knowledge etc... With such great expectations, we should conclude that children books are definitely not toys or play things.

Children Books are educational tools! They are not to be use as toys nor mistaken as toys. This is an important concept for parents because they will assist in the selection and purchase of books for their children. They may also read, monitor and structure the use of the books by their children. The importance of children books conceived by the parents is often relayed to their children. The selection of children books should reflect an understanding that they will begin to lay the foundation upon which future learning will be built. With all that we expect as parents and all that children will require to have success, we should try to assure that a significant number of our children books are truly educational tools.
